<programming> (Or "coercion") The abilty of some compilers to automatically insert type conversion functions where an expression of one type is used in a context where another type is expected. A common example is coercion of integers to reals so that an expression like sin(1) is compiled as sin(integerToReal(1)) where sin is of type Real -> Real. A coercion is usually performed automatically by the compiler whereas a cast is an explicit type conversion inserted by the programmer. See also subtype. (1997-07-28)

<programming> (Or "cast" in C and elsewhere). A programming construct (syntax) to specify that an expression's value should be converted to a different type. For example, in C, to convert an integer (usually 32 bits) to a char (usually 8 bits) we might write: int i = 42; char *p = &buf; *p = (char) i; The expression "(char)" (called a "cast") converts i's value to char type. Casts (including this one) are often not strictly necessary, due to automatic coercions performed by the compiler, but can be used to make the conversion obvious and to avoid warning messages. PROCESS WHEREBY MOLTEN METAL IS SOLIDIFIED INTO A "SEMIFINISHED" BILLET, BLOOM, OR SLAB FOR SUBSEQUENT ROLLING IN THE FINISHING MILLS
Continuous Casting; Continuous slab casting; Continuous casted; Conticaster; Continuous Caster; Strand casting
Continuous casting, also called strand casting, is the process whereby molten metal is solidified into a "semifinished" billet, bloom, or slab for subsequent rolling in the finishing mills. Prior to the introduction of continuous casting in the 1950s, steel was poured into stationary molds to form ingots.

Typecast, typecasting, or type casting may also refer to:

  • Type casting (computer programming), the act or result of changing an entity of one data type into another
  • Type casting (typography), a technique for casting individual letters for use in printing presses
